pH & WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
July 01/2022

Maintaining your pH is one of the most important factors when balancing your pool water chemistry. It’s going to be continuous process that you have to constantly monitor. An ideal pH range is 7.2-7.6 with 7.4 being ideal. NOTEABLE:  The pH scale is logarithmic, meaning that every whole unit increases is 10 times its predecessor. If your pH is 6.0, it’s not as simple as it being off by 1.0, it will 10 times more acidic than a pH of 7.0.

What happens if the pH level is too high or too low?

When pH is not within acceptable range, swimmers may notice skin and eye irritation.  Also, chlorine has the highest kill rate is ideal when pH levels are 7.4-7.6.  The further away from the ideals, the less effective the chlorine will be.    Problems with scale forming, etching and liner wrinkles occur when out pH is out of range.

So how do you adjust the pH? First, test your water. If the pH is too low then you will need to add Soda Ash (pH rise). If the pH is too high if you have a salt pool then you will add muriatic acid but for a less corrosive chemical you can use Dry Acid (pH lower). If you have chlorine then you can use Dry Acid (pH lower).   Note: your chemical adjustments are based on volume of water.
